battery-charging-tips

Your charging habits may be killing your gadgets.

1) Wait to charge till you're at 20%.

Your objective is to slow the rate at which you go through so-called charge cycles in order to get the most life possible out of your lithium battery. A desired number of battery discharge and recharge cycles is built into every device during design and manufacturing. Usually, it ranges from 300 to 1,000.

2) Avoid leaving it plugged in at full power or letting it deplete to zero.

Many of us charge our electronics while we sleep at night, which is acceptable. However, we also plug them in when driving to work or sitting at a desk all day. Avoid leaving devices plugged in often, advises Keoleian, as this might make your battery's capacity deteriorate.

3) Avoid letting it become too warm.

Our batteries, like the majority of us, are happiest at 72 degrees or lower. Furthermore, exposure to temperatures above 90 degrees, such as that found in a car on a sweltering summer day, is highly harmful to the battery chemistry. Remember that a battery might get significantly hotter if it is encased in a case, advises Pecht.

4) When using a new phone or laptop, try not to stress over too much about charging

Some good news: Over the past 10 years, electronics like high-end smartphones and laptops have become considerably wiser about charging and automatically avoid some of the errors mentioned above.

Although Keoleian thinks it's still a good idea to disconnect it occasionally, many laptops, which can sit in docking stations for weeks at a time, now know to stop charging and keep the battery below 100 percent.

5) Don’t upgrade when the battery dies — repair

When your device’s battery is finally kaput, you don’t necessarily have to get rid of it. Ask the manufacturer if there’s a way to replace the battery — or even look to see if you can do it yourself with the help of a repair website such as iFixit.

Getting another few years out of an existing gadget will save you cash, and it is also much better for the environment.
